BARRY-WEHMILLER & PLATFORM NEWS

OpEx 2.0 initiative gaining momentum through model site Rapid Improvement Events (RIEs)

With overall goals of improving on time delivery, enhancing customer trust and reducing frustration for team members, BW’s Operational Excellence 2.0 initiative continues to move forward at our model sites, where members of the BW Continuous Improvement and model site teams are uncovering best practices for material flow within our manufacturing facilities.

Watch this Q&A with Doug Neal to learn more about BW Continuous Improvement.

Currently, the sites are in Phase 3 of the initiative, which includes regular Rapid Improvement Events (RIEs). During an RIE:

  • A small team works together for a few days to analyze and improve a specific process
  • A facilitator guides the team through the process
  • The team reviews the current process, identifies problems, and brainstorms solutions
  • The team implements short-term improvements

During a recent RIE at BW Papersystems in Phillips, WI (US), members of the machine shop and OpEx 2.0 core teams devoted three days to analyzing the processes and steps they undertake in their work area in order to prioritize and level workflow and optimize capacity and space. After the RIE, Steve Hlavacek, CNC Machinist, shared his appreciation for the changes he and the rest

(L to R) Craig Ulrich, BWP-Phillips Machine Shop Leader & Steve Hlavacek, CNC Machinist

of the group brought about. “The area is less cluttered and I don’t have to search for lost parts. It was great we were able to make the work area our own and now I feel good about what we accomplish each day. I now see that I have a voice in daily frustrations.”
